A GATHERING LITURGY
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE
“We are thoroughly nature. To claim otherwise is to attempt to place human beings and everything we do
in some rare unimaginable realm beyond the universe,
thus rendering the power of our origins lost and our obligations vague”
31 March 2024. Easter Day B. (White)
Celebrating Community the Tradition of the Meal
We need a new configuration of liturgy and climate to celebrate Easter in Australia.
In the southern hemisphere we cannot exploit the theme of Spring’s new life.
Perhaps the theme of refreshing coolness would be an excellent substitute to enrich our appreciation of the Easter event.
April in Australia is a pleasant, refreshing month.
Its arrival brings a sense of relief from the thick blanket of summer
as we are rejuvenated by a touch of coolness.
For us, this is Eastertime...

GATHERING
Refreshment Station/Water Basins
Pottery basins are set on stands near the entrance to the Gathering space.
Attendees are invited to dip their hands in the cool water in the basins as they arrive.
Or to rinse each other’s hands.
That we may relax, be refreshed, and prepare for this time together.
(Note: A small sign is placed above the basin explaining that as they dip their hands in the water, they are invited to relax and try to mindfully set aside or release for a time anything that might be preventing them from being fully present—each traveller rinsing the “dust from the road”).
OR
(A suggestion of other words)
We come together from our separate lives,
each of us bringing our concerns, our preoccupations,
our hopes, and our dreams.
We are not yet fully present.
The traffic, the last-minute cooking, the final details still cling to us.
Our bodies hold the rush of the past few hours.
It is now time to let go of these pressures and really arrive…
When you are ready, repeat silently to yourself: ‘Hineini’ or ‘Here I am’.
Hineini is used in the Torah to signify being present
in body, mind, and spirit.
It means settling into where we are and simply being “here”. (Adapted/Nan Fink Gene)

So let us live this moment in all its fullness,
for in it is all realisation, all time. (Adapt.Kenneth Patton/sscl)

O enter then his gates with praise,

Presentation of Water Basins
Words which acknowledge that the dust of many roads and many life experiences has been rinsed into the basins,
and calls for the contents of the basins and the gathering to be transformed, renewed, and more fully alive
v1 The dust of many roads and may life experiences
has been washed in this refreshing water.
For this place is a sacred place.
May we
greet one another with open hearts and minds;
inspire each other to consider new questions
and seek deeper meaning;
and cultivate both wisdom and compassion.
And may this time together empower us to take some new steps
so all our living is transforming and the
yearning of our hearts become reality.

Centering Silence
Centering silence has its roots in the earliest of monastic traditions of the ‘desert Fathers (abbas)/Mothers (ammas)’

RECOLLECTION OF BAPTISM (Optional)
v1 In the very early Christianities,
when the people gathered to worship on Easter morning,
they would be reminded of their baptism
as they witnessed the baptism of others.
This morning we, more than 20 centuries later, follow in that tradition.
New water is poured into the font
Come, Spirit of Life, Beyond all Names,
enfold us, impel us, refresh us
As water is sprinkled over the congregation...
Always remember you are baptised and be thankful...
v2 Baptised into a new way of being,
a new humanity,
fit for the glory and dignity
of this one Earth community…
And raised up,
a new creation grasping for life,
that we might grasp the full extent
of the mystery of being –

EXPLORING
Wisdom from the World/Religious Traditions
“Wisdom is not just special knowledge about something. Wisdom is a way of being, a way of inhabiting the world.
The beauty of wisdom is harmony, belonging and illumination of thought, action, heart and mind.” (John O’Donohue)

within meaning, the wisdom for which we seek. (Gretta Vosper/ab)

• “Thank God for Bursting Life!”
By Shirley Erena Murray. A Place at the Table/37
Thank God for bursting life, for greening leaf, for sign of Spring’s sowing!
The Easter sunrise brings the light that can illumine all our knowing!
What crucifixion failed to kill, is well alive this Day:
a peace-determined Way,
God’s realm of hope and promise,
of peace lived in promise,
as Jesus lived this promise.
Thank God for courage raised to roll away the stones of dead traditions,
to crack the codes of death, to give the fearful powers no free permission!
What crucifixion failed to kill, is well alive this Day:
a fairer, kinder Way,
a signatory to justice,
commitment to justice,
as Jesus lives this justice.
Thank God for feisty souls who let no weight of history deter them!
Who liberate the faith, who let the Easter air revive and stir them!
What crucifixion failed to kill, is well alive this Day:
non-violent, this Way,
a charter for compassion,
the power of compassion,
as Jesus lived compassion.
Thank God for fresh-baked bread, the loaf we share,
the yeasty fragrance rising.
The bubbling up of hope, the wine outpoured in joy of God’s devising!
What crucifixion failed to kill, is well alive this Day:
the Gospel-driven Way;
the human spirit’s freedom,
the risen life’s freedom,
as Jesus lived this freedom.
• John 20: 1-18 (NRSV)
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark,
Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone
had been removed from the tomb.
So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple,
the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them,
“They have taken the Lord out of the tomb,
and we do not know where they have laid him.”
Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb.
The two were running together,
but the other disciple outran Peter
and reached the tomb first.
He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there,
but he did not go in.
Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb.
He saw the linen wrappings lying there,
and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head,
not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.
Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first,
also went in, and he saw and believed;
for as yet they did not understand the scripture,
that he must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples returned to their homes.
But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb.
As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb;
and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying,
one at the head and the other at the feet.
They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?”
She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord,
and I do not know where they have laid him.”
When she had said this,
she turned around and saw Jesus standing there,
but she did not know that it was Jesus.
Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?”
Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,
“Sir, if you have carried him away,
tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”
Jesus said to her, “Mary!”
She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher).
Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me,
because I have not yet ascended to the Father.
But go to my brothers and say to them,
I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,
“I have seen the Lord”; and she told them
that he had said these things to her.

• Mark 16: 1-8. (Inclusive Text/NRSV)
When the sabbath was over, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome,
bought spices with which to go and anoint Jesus.
And very early in the morning on the first day of the week
they went to the tomb, just as the sun was rising.
They had been saying to one another,
'Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?'
But when they looked they could see that the stone - which was very big -
had already been rolled back.
On entering the tomb they saw a youth in a white robe
seated on the right-hand side,
and they were struck with amazement.
But the youth said to them:
'There is no need for alarm.
You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified:
Jesus has risen, and is not here.
'See, here is the place where they laid him.
'But you must go and tell the disciples and Peter:
Jesus is going before you to Galilee;
it is there you will see him, just as he told you.'
So they went out and fled from the tomb,
for both terror and amazement had seized them.
And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.
