‘THE OTHER LECTIONARY’
Rev Rex A E Hunt, MSc(Hons)
This suggested ‘southern hemisphere’ Lectionary (with a few Resources added below) is being offered in parallel to, or even replacement of, the RCL which is in standard use by many. The idea behind it is it gives a choice on some days/Sundays of the year for the more ‘progressive’.
But perhaps more than that, it is an attempt to be ‘landscape real’.
Towards the end of his life, Westar Institute founder and New Testament scholar Robert Funk, issued a ‘call to arms’ on the Sunday Morning experience: throw the old forms out and start over again... Design a new Sunday Morning experience from the ground up... new music, new liturgy, new scriptures, new ceremonies, new rites of passage.
He admitted there were two schools of thought on such a project: One school advises us to continue to employ the old forms but understand them differently. The more progressive school would have us modify the old liturgy, music, and scriptures by cleaning them up and bringing them closer to what we really believe.
I have been trying to do some of that during my ministry - both with the Liturgy - A Gathering Liturgy for the Celebration of Life - and with specific bits within the liturgy - such as themes and readings. Such readings are mostly non-biblical.
The following is not all there could be, for such an ‘Other Lectionary’. But it is a sample gift for each to reshape and add to, as each sees fit.

“The Anniversary of the Battle of Milvian Bridge. It was on this day in 312CE that Constantine and his brother-in-law Maxentius, each backed with substantial armies, contested for supreme rule of the entire Roman Empire. Constantine was victorious and thus were inaugurated two millennia of systemic Christian imperialism, global antisemitism and corruption of the original Jesus message into Nicenian Christology”.
